Building inspection
Permits required
Building permits are required for new construction, additions, alterations, demolition, and most mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work. The eGov portal accepts online applications for most permit types.
Plan review
The Building Inspection division reviews construction plans for compliance with the Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code (residential) and Commercial Building Code. Review times vary based on project complexity.
Inspections
Schedule inspections through eGov or by calling (608) 755-3060. Inspectors check footings, framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, insulation, and final occupancy at various stages of construction.
Contractor registration
Contractors working in Janesville must be registered with the City. Electrical and plumbing contractors must hold valid state licenses.
